| Wilderness in the Harpers Creek and Lost Cove Areas Proposed by Coalition of Conservationists. The North Carolina Wilderness Coalition comprised of a number of conservation groups is seeking wilderness designation for the Lost Cove and Harpers Creek Wilderness Study Areas in western North Carolina. Appalachian Voices is providing significant leadership in the drive. Appalachian Voices seeks to fight every ecologically misguided timber sale proposed in National Forests in western North Carolina, Alabama, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. They also seek additional wilderness designations of roadless and wilderness study areas in the southern and central Appalachians. Aldo Leopold wrote that a wilderness supplies a “base datum of normality, a picture of how healthy land maintains itself as an organism.” In other words, a wilderness is a control by which we can judge impacts of human development in other areas. For more information on the campaign and how you can help, contact the North Carolina Wilderness Coalition through Appalachian Voices at 303 West King Street, Suite 105, Boone, North Carolina 28607 or phone at 828-262-1500 or visit the website at www.appvoices.org In October, 2003, several Christians visited the Harpers Creek and Lost Cove Wilderness Study Areas to develop a statement on the spiritual values of these wilderness areas. Pictures of the event and the beautiful scenery can also be viewed. |
