GasLand: The Movie and the Movement
"The largest domestic natural gas drilling boom in history has swept across the United States. The Halliburton-developed drilling technology of "fracking" or hydraulic fracturing has unlocked a "Saudia Arabia of natural gas" just beneath us. But is fracking safe? When filmmaker Josh Fox is asked to lease his land for drilling, he embarks on a cross-country odyssey uncovering a trail of secrets, lies and contamination. A recently drilled nearby Pennsylvania town reports that residents are able to light their drinking water on fire. This is just one of the many absurd and astonishing revelations of a new country called GASLAND. Part verite travelogue, part expose, part mystery, part bluegrass banjo meltdown, part showdown."[Gasland]
CFTM's Laura Dagley lives in Harrisburg, Pa., the heart of the Marcellus Shale gas blitz. Laura has become a good friend with Josh Fox, even assisting him in the filming of an upcoming documentary that updates the gas issue.
Gasland (the movie) is one of the best tools to explain the new industrial practice of "fracking." The film is inexpensive, about $13 from discounters.
Josh Fox recently received an Emmy for Outstanding Directing For Nonfiction Programming for Gasland. Fox, onstage, gave an impassioned speech about fracking and the environment, saying, “We cannot allow America to turn into a gas field.”
Only a few days earlier, Fox had been arrested for civil disobedience at a major protest in front of the White House over the proposed Keystone XL pipeline to bring dirty tar oil from Alberta to Texas.
