Much of today’s Christian music is flavored with the styles of pop, rock, jazz, Latino, African, black gospel, southern gospel, country, hip-hop, classical, and so forth. The variety of styles reflects the diversity of culture with music as an expression of language.
Christian music festivals attract huge crowds upwards to 70,000 or more, while concerts of touring professionals promote huge CD sales. It is clear that Christian music is a most powerful means of communication.
Contemporary forms of Christian music have their detractors as well. Some of the objections are that its styles are too closely tied to secular styles with their sometimes vulgar applications. Other objections involve a concern that some of the lyrics lack the theological strength of some of the classical hymns. Others simply prefer the more traditional and classical expressions of music.
The upshot, however, is that many Christians like contemporary music. Just as with the traditional hymns, many of today’s songs employ terminology in which God’s creation gives praise to God, or points to the creative power of God, inspires the worshipper with awe, or brings analogy to bear upon the work of God with humanity.
We welcome contributions to this page as a resource to emphasize the importance of God’s creation.
Below is one of the most popular songs, “Shout to the Lord” by Darlene Zschech of Hillsong Community in Australia. This speaks of creation praising God.
My Jesus, My Savior
Lord there is none like you
All of my days, I want to praise
The wonders of your mighty love
My comfort, My Shelter
Tower of refuge and strength
Let every breath, all that I am
Never cease to worship you
(chorus)
Shout to the Lord, all the earth
Let us sing. Power and majesty, praise to the king.
Mountains bow down and the seas will roar
At the sound of your name
I sing for joy at the work of your hands
Forever I'll love you, forever I'll stand
Nothing compares to the promise I have in you
(chorus)
My Jesus, My Savior
Lord there is none like you
All of my days, I want to praise
The wonders of your mighty love
My Comfort, My Shelter
Tower of refuge and strength
Let every breath, all that I am
Never cease to worship you
(chorus)
(chorus x2)
Nothing compares to the promise I have in you
Nothing compares to the promise I have in you
Nothing compares to the promise I have in you
