Christian Organizations Advocating for Creation

“The Earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it; the world, and all that lives upon it.”  (Psalm 24:1)

Several Christian ministries are active in the southern and central Appalachians that are engaing in issues related to the Appalachian environment.

Below are links to some of these groups. This page is just a starter. Members are encouraged to submit more links:

Lindquist Environmental Appalachian Fellowship (LEAF) has as its stated mission "to bring the issue of mountaintop removal (MTR) to the attention of East Tennessee's Christian communities and encourage them to address the environmental destruction and economic injustice this practice inflicts on the land and people of Applachia." LEAF is concerned that Tennessee is MTR is poising to greatly expand in Tennessee, and is seeking action to stop this egregious practice.

Restoring Eden makes hearts bigger, hands dirtier, and voices stronger by encouraging Christians to learn to love, serve, and protect God's creation. Restoring Eden is not a traditional ministry - we are less about membership and programs, and more about a conversation and a community that lives out the biblical mandate to "speak out for those who cannot speak for themselves" (Proverbs 31:8) as advocates for natural habitats, wild species and indigenous subsistance cultures. Restoring Eden will sponsor a tour of Mountaintop Removal April 4-5, 2008 in West Virginia followed by lobbying in Washington, DC.

A Rocha is becoming active in the issue of Mountaintop Removal. A Rocha's 5 C's: Christian, Conservation, Community, Cross-Cultural, and Cooperation- seek to awaken, inspire, equip and engage people-Christians and non-Christians alike-to care for creation. This is through word, example and hands-on opportunities.

The Catholic Committee of Appalachia abides in these mountains to bring to life the challenges set forth in both Appalachian Pastorals: This Land is Home to Me-A Pastoral Message on Poverty and Powerlessness in Appalachia, and At Home in the Web of Life-A Pastoral Message on Sustainable Community in Appalachia. Strong environmental and justice advocacy with CCAPPAL.
